CPE1004   Science for Chemical Engineers   (20 credits)

Year Running: 2015/2016
Credit level: F4
Pre Uni Qualification   A Level Maths and Chemistry

Description

This unit covers basics of Physics (e.g. units and dimensions, statics, kinetics, electricity and energy) and Biology (e.g. cell types and function, cell chemistry, proteins, genetic engineering) for those students who have not studied the subject at A Level or equivalent, to develop a base for further chemical engineering studies. The unit also builds on existing knowledge in chemistry and will introduce some key concepts for chemical engineers. The material will begin with the atomic and sub-atomic structure of molecules and will consider molecular and electronic interactions. This will lead to a description of real and ideal gasses. An introduction to thermodynamics and thermo-chemistry will provide a base for future units. Chemical change will look at the kinetics of reactions in initial states and close to equilibrium. The unit aims to introduce aspects of molecular and bulk physical chemistry with a mathematical treatment so as to provide a firm scientific base that can be transferred into core chemical engineering units.
